Favorite Author Week: Eric Carle

It's been so much fun talking about, reading, and exploring Eric Carle books this week!  He's a well-known author and illustrator of children's book, and we've had a great time learning more about him and his books.  We've done some fun hands-on activities with our friends to help us learn new skills, and I hope you enjoy seeing all of our pics from the week.  I've also included some links to some of his books in animated versions online.  Hope you enjoy it!

"The Very Hungry Caterpillar" - animated book video

"Papa, Please Get the Moon for Me" - animated book video

"The Very Quiet Cricket" - animated book video

"The Mixed-Up Chameleon" - animated book video

We talked about the letter "F" and decorated it with feathers to remind us of a word that makes this sound.

After reading the book called, "The Hungry Caterpillar," we used tissue paper to decorate our own caterpillars.

We used hole punching to punch holes through pictures of food and even paper leaves to appear that we were taking bites just like the caterpillar does in the book.  This was quite a workout for our little hands and fine motor skills.

We painted paper and then used the paper to create different crafts.  Many of Carle's illustrations look like painted paper too.

We traced our caterpillar paths on our papers and then created caterpillars with pom poms, eyes, and popsicle sticks.

We also read the book, "Brown Bear, Brown Bear" and created our own small book for our reading folder too.  This was a great way to practice color words and repetition of some basic sight words too.

After coloring a picture of our own bears, I dictated a sentence that each child came up with about their own bear.  It was so funny to hear some of the things they said the bear was doing, looking for, or was named.  I love to hear their stories! :)

This specific bear was "looking for macaroni, a home, and some people." :)

We practiced tracing the letters we've covered so far with dry erase markers.

We talked about things that make us unique after reading, "The Mixed-Up Chameleon."  It's a story about a chameleon that wants to be like everyone else instead of realizing how special he is all on his own.  We decorated our chameleons with all different colors of paper too.

After reading the book, "The Grouchy Ladybug," we talked about all the things that make us feel grouchy.  Then, we made our own ladybugs with pictures of our grouchy faces.  These were hilarious!  It's so funny to see some of the sweetest kiddos having a hard time even making a grouchy face.  Too cute!

These are my grouch ladybugs!  Watch out!

We worked on making our own caterpillars out of pipe cleaners and plastic pouch lids.  We talked about color patterns we could use with all the different color options too.

We brought in all of our items for Show and Tell with the letter "F" this week, and we wore the color yellow too.

 We had 1 Fluttershy pony...

2 flashlights...

 1 fan...

1 fish and 1 flower...

1 frying pan...

1 fish hook...

1 family of fish...

1 frog named Kermit...

1 picture of a family...

1 flamingo...

1 front loader...

1 fire truck...

Free reading time at the end of the day. :)

We talked about sweet vs. sour words and how important it is to use kind and "sweet" words instead of mean "sour" words.  So, we tried a bite of a sweet banana vs. a sour lemon to see which one we liked best. :)  Sweet words and sweet foods unanimously won!  This was a great way to tie in our color of the week, yellow, with our foods too.

The lemon face! :-/

Playing with friends inside

These sweet girls were taking very good care of these babies.

These kiddos LOVE to build with Magna Tiles!

Bridge and Lunch Bunch Afternoon Classes

Making letters and shapes with unifex cubes

We made squares.

We made letter "F".

We made lowercase "t".

We made capital "T".

We matched letter pictures with the correct letters on each card.  This required some team work for sure.

We made sunflowers similar to Eric Carle's illustrations in "The Tiny Seed" book.  We planted paper plates, added sunflower seeds to the middle, and then created a green stem with a popsicle stick.

We used painted pieces of paper to create our own flowers and then drew a stem on them too.

Hope you enjoyed all of our pictures from the week! :)
