Winter Animals

It's been one crazy weather week as we've explored winter animals and all the fun things they do.  We read a variety of books about different types of winter animals and how they survive in the winter.  We even talked about blubber that helps keep animals warm and did a little science experiment to talk about it too.  We also talked about letter "V" and continued to review #1-13, shapes, and our other letters in preparation for upcoming assessments.  Hope you enjoy the pics and videos from the week!

Penguin Dance Song by Jack Hartmann

Wow, oh wow! Jesus can do anything! Song

After reading the book, "The Mitten" by Jan Brett, we created our own mitten with tissue paper and cotton balls.  This was a fun story about tons of winter animals that fit inside one little mitten until one of the animals sneezed and sent all of them flying out of the mitten into the air.

 So cute and colorful too!

We also talked about if we had a big mitten, and what we would be able to fit inside of it.

Since we've been learning about winter animals, we created these cute snowy owls.  We used a loofah sponge to make the furry body and added eyes, a nose, and a branch.  So cool!

We made polar bears too using paint resist process.  A polar bear was taped to the paper, and the kiddos rolled paint all over the paper with little rollers.  After removing the paper bear, we got to see this cute image left behind.

We worked on reviewing our numbers 1-13 by creating penguin crafts with ice cubes.  They glued on on white paper squares around the penguins to look like igloos, and used 1;1 correspondence by counting to make sure they had 13 squares.  Then, we wrote our numbers 1-13 for practice on the each square.  Great number practice all around!

Fine motor fun

Matching letters written on our cookie sheets with magnetic letters

Using a "blubber glove" with shortening on the inside of it to replicate blubber in animals' skin.

We started having a Student of the Week each week now.  To start off the process, Mrs. Nicole shared items in her "All About Me" basket to share with the class.

Abel was our first Student of the Week, and we'll continue down the line alphabetically until everyone has had a turn.

Each week, we draw a picture of our special student by using shapes we know and realistic colors based on what they look like and what they're wearing that day.  We love creativity, but we're also working on kindergarten skills as well with using appropriate colors to match what we see and similar shapes to match what we see as well.  It's a process though for sure! :)

Abel shared his basketful of goodies to tell us more about him as our Student of the Week.
